TORNHUSET

The Sickla area is currently undergoing a process of transformation and urbanization, rapidly becoming an extension of Stockholm City. Commerce and services mixed with new residential development will form the new identity of the area. Presently the main architectural characteristic of this area is one of diversity in terms of typology and scale. Our ambition was to create an urban environment that connects the existing, mixed, non-urban development to a new neighbourhood typology that responds to the specific conditions and needs of the site. The new housing is located on a plinth with entrances and courtyards that connect to the surrounding topography on two floors. The new proposed housing consists of five towers created by staggering boxes of three sizes. By varying the number of floors and rotating the towers we create a more playful and rich residential neighbourhood of basically one and the same tower.

Tornhusen by OOAK was the entry in an invited competition to design a condominium building at the new area of Sickla, in Nacka.

How to create a residential block with urban qualities and mixed use character while responding to the particularities of different scales and typologies of the site?
